Where to Escape in Case of Nuclear War?

Where to Escape in Case of Nuclear War?
The possibility of a global nuclear conflict is a subject that, while it may seem distant, is increasingly being discussed by experts. Recently, investigative journalist Annie Jacobsen, in her book Nuclear War: A Scenario, argued that in the event of a large-scale nuclear catastrophe, Australia and New Zealand would be the safest countries to flee to.
The reasoning behind this is not random. These nations present unique geographical and social characteristics that, according to specialists, could soften the worst consequences of nuclear war. However, for us in Portugal, the inevitable question arises: if the world were to face such an extreme scenario, is it realistic to think about fleeing to the other side of the planet? Or is it wiser to create survival conditions right here at home?
Why Australia and New Zealand Are Seen as Safe Havens
The main reason experts point to Australia and New Zealand lies in their geographic position. These countries are far from major centers of political and military decision-making, which means they are less likely to be direct targets. They also have relatively low population densities, reducing the risks of overcrowding in a crisis.
Another advantage is their access to natural resources. While global agriculture would be severely disrupted by nuclear fallout, climate changes, and radioactive contamination, both countries have conditions that might allow them to maintain a degree of resilience and autonomy.
But for Europeans — and particularly for the Portuguese — reaching these destinations in the midst of a global crisis would be virtually impossible. Air and maritime transport would be disrupted or extremely dangerous, making this solution highly impractical.
What About Portugal?
If fleeing to distant countries is not an option, the most effective strategy is to strengthen local preparedness. While Portugal is not considered a primary target in the event of a nuclear war, the secondary effects — radioactive fallout, food and energy shortages, disruption of supply chains, and even climate instability — would certainly reach us.
Preparation, therefore, becomes essential. The construction or adaptation of underground shelters and bunkers provides a first line of defense against radiation, blast waves, and extreme temperatures. Having access to a safe and reinforced space could make the decisive difference in an emergency.
Still, a bunker alone is not enough. Long-term survival depends on access to durable food reserves, potable water, and independent energy sources. Products such as long-term emergency food with a 25-year shelf life, portable solar generators, and advanced water filtration systems guarantee autonomy when external infrastructures collapse.
Equally critical is NBC protection (Nuclear, Biological, Chemical). Certified gas masks with NBC filters, protective suits, and decontamination equipment are essential tools for personal and family safety. At the same time, 72-hour survival kits and emergency backpacks provide the basic resources needed to endure the first days of crisis.
Local Preparedness: The Best Strategy for the Portuguese
Although Australia and New Zealand may be considered ideal destinations in the event of a nuclear catastrophe, for most of us that option is simply unrealistic. The true solution lies in building resilience here in Portugal. Investing in bunkers, securing long-term emergency food, acquiring NBC protection equipment, and developing off-grid energy strategies is not about fear — it’s about responsibility.
At Portugal Bunkers & Shelters, we believe that the best way to face uncertainty is through preparation. That’s why we provide solutions ranging from modular underground bunkers and emergency shelters to complete survival kits, NBC masks and suits, and off-grid energy systems.
In times of crisis, the difference between improvising and being prepared could mean safety for you and your family. Escaping to the other side of the world may be a distant dream; preparing in Portugal is a reality within your reach.
